What happened

On 2 October 2026, Militarnyi reported that the first spacecraft from the second production batch of Rassvet satellites had reached an altitude of approximately 500 km. The batch of 16 spacecraft was launched in July and had remained under observation because most satellites were still raising their orbits in early September.

The development follows the 4 September assessment recorded in LAT-RU-RAS-0006, which cautioned against treating the July batch as a failure while orbit raising was still under way.

Evidence and limitations

The assessment is based on publicly observable orbital behaviour rather than a Bureau 1440 announcement. This provides stronger evidence for spacecraft position and manoeuvring than company statements alone, but orbital altitude does not establish communications performance, payload health or operational service.

The milestone applies to an individual spacecraft and should not be extrapolated to the full July batch. Some spacecraft remain at different altitudes and their eventual operational status is unresolved.

Confidence: Moderate to high for the orbital observation; insufficient evidence to conclude that the second batch as a whole is operational.

Assessment

The observation materially updates the September record. At least one spacecraft from the July batch has now completed most or all of the prolonged orbit-raising phase to the altitude range occupied by deployed Rassvet spacecraft. This weakens early claims that the entire second batch had failed, while leaving open the possibility of individual spacecraft anomalies or losses.

Why it matters

The rate at which the July satellites reach stable operational altitudes affects estimates of Rassvet’s deployment efficiency, attrition and the speed at which additional communications windows could be created. Continued tracking of each spacecraft is necessary before assessing the batch’s overall success.
